Catholic Church Leaders: 'Oppose Same-Sex Marriage'

Leaders of the Philippines' dominant Catholic church have called on individuals and politicians to actively oppose same-sex marriage, after new efforts by activists to have same-sex unions legalised in the conservative nation.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) issued a statement Sunday saying individuals should refuse to take part in ceremonies celebrating same-sex relationships and politicians should resist legalising marriages of homosexual couples.

"A homosexual union is not and can never be a marriage as properly understood and so-called," the CBCP said in the statement posted on its website.

"There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be similar or even remotely analogous to God's plan for marriage and the family."

It added that Catholic lawmakers have "a moral duty" to express their "opposition clearly and publicly" and to vote against a law.

CBCP president Bishop Socrates Villegas confirmed to AFP on Monday that the statement was the position of the church, which is followed by more than 80 percent of Filipinos.

The statement comes as activists push to have same-sex unions legalised, which would require a law to be passed in the deeply conservative country where divorce and abortion are still illegal largely due to Catholic pressure.

Earlier in August, two same-sex couples applied for marriage licences in a Manila suburb but were turned down. They later brandished a sign saying "We were denied" in front of a rainbow flag.

Small independent churches aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have also sprung up, sometimes conducting unofficial "weddings" for their members, while several Filipino celebrities have come out in favour of same-sex marriage.

The LGBT community has meanwhile been increasingly vocal about the issue on social media.

While expressing compassion for homosexuals, the CBCP said, "sexual attraction towards the same sex is... in the light of our understanding of marriage, objectively disordered."

Gay rights have been in the spotlight around the world following the US Supreme Court's landmark ruling to legalise gay marriage in June.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Taiwan in July calling for the legalisation of gay marriage, while pressure is mounting on the Australian government for a parliamentary vote on the subject.

Ex-President Estrada to Attend China's WWII Parade

Former Philippine president Joseph Estrada will attend China's huge military parade this week marking Japan's defeat in World War II despite the territorial tensions between Manila and Beijing, his spokesman said on Monday.

However the disgraced ex-leader will attend in his capacity as mayor of Manila and not as a representative of the national government, said his media affairs chief Diego Cagahastian.

"He will be going as an invited guest. Manila is the sister city of Beijing and he is going as mayor of Manila," Cagahastian told AFP.

Estrada, a former top movie star who was elected president in 1998 but ousted in an uprising in 2001, will leave for China on Monday and return on September 6, he added.

Government spokesmen have not said if any senior official will represent the country at the parade even though China and the Philippines were antagonists of Japan during World War II.

In recent years, tensions between the two countries have been strained over their conflicting claims to parts of the South China Sea.

Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also have conflicting claims to the sea.

Manila has been the most vocal in opposing China, publicly accusing it of "bullying" to assert its maritime claim and filing a case before an international tribunal in the Hague, challenging China's position.

Estrada, who was convicted of massive graft in 2007 but later pardoned, has taken a more conciliatory stance with China.

In a recent interview, Estrada was quoted as saying he hoped China would help in the modernisation of the Philippines and that relations would soon improve.

After his pardon, Estrada was elected mayor of Manila in 2012.

FOI Bill is still Congress' Priority

The Freedom of Information (FOI) bill remains a priority of the House of Representatives despite criticism from transparency groups that the chamber is not acting on the landmark measure, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said yesterday.

Belmonte said the FOI bill was among the measures listed by both leaders of the House and Senate last month as prioritized for passage before the campaign period for the 2016 elections starts in February.

“Our list of priorities remains unchanged and our timetable and agenda is still the same,” Belmonte told reporters, adding that “as soon as there is an opportunity to pass it, we’ll do so.”

The Right to Know, Right Now! Coalition, a national coalition of groups and individuals campaigning for transparency and accountability in government, has released a statement declaring the “death” of the FOI bill in Congress.

The measure, which was a consolidation of 20 bills filed by several lawmakers, has been passed at the committee level but has yet to be presented in plenary for approval on second reading.

The counterpart bill in the Senate was already passed on third and final reading.

Earlier, authors of the FOI bill expressed disappointment that President Aquino did not push for the approval of the transparency measure in his last State of the Nation Address.

Parañaque City Rep. Gustavo Tambunting, one of the authors of the measure, said Aquino would have gained more support from the public had he mentioned the FOI bill.

“I had expected him to push for the FOI bill since he was supposed to be for transparency in government,” Tambunting said.

Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo, one of the authors of the measure, said he hopes the House will pass the bill soon.

“We are looking forward to the plenary debates on the bill which are certainly bound to be challenging,” Akbayan party-list Rep. Barry Gutierrez, also an author, said in a statement.

“We are already prepared to answer any and all questions relating to the various issues and concerns about the FOI,” he said.

The FOI bill covers all government offices in the executive, legislative and judicial branches as well as constitutional bodies.

The transparency measure seeks to make available for public scrutiny, copying and reproduction all information pertaining to official acts, transactions or decisions as well government research data used as basis for policy development.

It, however, also makes certain exemptions, including information that is specifically authorized to be kept secret such as those relating to national security; records of minutes and opinions expressed during the policy-formulation invoked by the President as privileged; information gathered by any congressional committee in executive session; and information whose disclosure will constitute unwarranted invasion of privacy.

Reps. Leni Robredo of Camarines Sur and Kaka Bag-ao of Dinagat Islands, who are also among the authors of the FOI bill, cited other major youth groups – such as the FOI Youth Initiative – that have not lost hope for the measure.

“We are glad that their optimism remains firm in the fight for the passage of this important measure. At the end of the day, progressive legislation can only be enacted not just through the efforts of lawmakers, but through active citizenship and people’s participation,” Robredo said.

“If they say that there is still hope, it is our duty as their representatives to ensure that their aspiration will be fulfilled,” Bag-ao said.

Four patients from San Rafael town have been  reported dead from the mosquito-borne disease.

Why DIY Braces Aren't Good for You

Braces are worn by more than 4 million people in the United States. They’re not comfortable, they don’t always look awesome, and they’re definitely not cheap. But the payoff is why people do it: After all that professioal orthodontic care, you’ll end up with a straight line of pearly whites.

Turns out, there is a growing trend of do-it-yourself braces — and it’s concerning the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Some people have used paper clips, rubber bands, and elastic floss to try to fashion their own braces and attempt to move their own teeth. (Case in point: this 2012 YouTube video titled “Cheap easy braces!! Without going to the dentist!!!!!”)

Bad idea, experts say, because you could end up injuring yourself — and even losing your teeth.

“I personally have had a patient who chose to attempt to close a space between his front teeth with the use of rubber bands (elastics),” explains DeWayne B. McCamish, DDS, MS, an orthodontist in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and president-elect of the AAO. But “one of the elastics was forgotten about and left on the teeth. It became submerged under the gum tissue while additional elastics continued to be placed on his teeth.”

Because of the ice-cream-cone-like shape of the front tooth, the elastic ended up migrating to the root of the tooth. This led to bone loss, and this patient eventually lost two of his permanent front teeth, McCamish tells Yahoo Health. Total costs to replace his teeth: $50,000.

McCamish also notes the potential dangerous effect of social media in perpetuating this trend. “The Internet can be wonderful with very pertinent, accurate information, but unfortunately, can be the source of misinformation, as well,” he says.

Orthodontists receive training to safely help patients have straighter teeth and a more aligned bite — an extra two to three years beyond dental school, in fact. If cost is the reason a person is considering DIY braces, “most orthodontists are glad to work with patients and parents to offer affordable payment plans over the course of treatment,” McCamish adds. “In addition, there are even some charitable organizations that many orthodontists belong to, and through them perform treatment for qualifying patients without a charge.”

North Korea says They are prepared to risk War

North Korea warned it was prepared to risk "all-out war" as leader Kim Jong-Un put his frontline troops on combat readiness to back up an ultimatum for South Korea to halt propaganda broadcasts across the border by Saturday afternoon.

The warning came as military tensions on the divided Korean peninsula soared following a rare exchange of artillery fire on Thursday that put the South Korean army on maximum alert.

"Our military and people are prepared to risk an all-out war not just to simply respond or retaliate, but to defend the system our people chose," North Korea's foreign ministry said in a statement early Saturday on the official KCNA news agency, according to the South's Yonhap news agency.

"The situation has reached the verge of war and can no longer be reversed."

In New York, Pyongyang's deputy UN ambassador An Myong-Hun also warned "if South Korea does not respond to our ultimatum, our military counteraction will be inevitable, and that counteraction will be very strong".

"The situation on the Korean peninsula inches close to the brink of a war," An told reporters.

Technically, the two Koreas have been at war for the past 65 years, as the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a ceasefire that was never ratified by a formal peace treaty.

Kim has given similarly bellicose orders in the past, most recently in 2013 when he declared "a state of war" with the South, although no clashes resulted.

'Reckless acts'

Over the decades, South Koreans have become accustomed to the North's provocative and belligerent behavior, and there was no sense of public panic in Seoul despite the dire threats.

Kim chaired an emergency meeting late Thursday of the North's powerful Central Military Commission (CMC), which endorsed the ultimatum for the South to switch off its propaganda unit loudspeakers by Saturday afternoon or face military action.

South Korea's defense ministry insisted the loudspeakers would keep operating.

KCNA said Kim ordered frontline, combined units of the Korean People's Army (KPA) to "enter a wartime state" from Friday 5:00 pm (0830 GMT).

The troops should be "fully battle ready to launch surprise operations" while the entire frontline should be placed in a "semi-war state", KCNA quoted him as saying.

In response, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff urged the KPA to refrain from any "reckless acts".

South Korean television broadcast images of President Park Geun-Hye wearing army fatigues as she addressed a meeting of top military commanders outside Seoul.

"Any provocations by North Korea will not be tolerated," Park told the gathering.

The United States urged Pyongyang to avoid any further escalation, with the Pentagon stressing it remained firmly committed to defending ally South Korea. UN chief Ban Ki-moon urged both sides to "refrain from taking any further measures that might increase tensions" and China called on "relevant parties to remain calm and restrained".

Rising tensions

Direct exchanges of fire across the inter-Korean land border are extremely rare -- mainly, analysts say, because both sides recognise the risk of a sudden and potentially disastrous escalation.

But Yoo Ho-Yeol, a professor of North Korean studies at Korea University in Seoul, said although previous episodes of tense brinkmanship had not escalated into conflict, this could not be ruled out.
"We've been here before several times, but that doesn't mean it isn't still dangerous," Yoo said. "There's a real possibility of this confrontation leading to some sort of armed clash."

The last direct attack on the South was in November 2010 when North Korea shelled the South Korean border island of Yeonpyeong, killing two civilians and two soldiers. Seoul said Thursday's artillery exchange was triggered by North Korea firing several shells in the rough direction of one of its border propaganda units.

The South responded by firing "dozens" of 155mm howitzer rounds.

Nearly all the shells from both sides landed in their respective halves of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), a four-kilometre-wide (2.5-mile-wide) buffer zone that straddles the actual frontier line. Tensions were already on high-simmer before the shelling, following mine blasts that maimed two members of a South Korean border patrol this month and the launch Monday of a major South Korea-US military exercise that infuriated Pyongyang.

Seoul said the mines were placed by North Korea and responded by resuming the high-decibel propaganda broadcasts after more than a decade. —Agence France-Presse

North Korea to enter 'State of War'

According to The People's Daily, China, North Korea Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un already ordered their front-line troops to enter the State of War after exchange in artillery fires. According to the Defense Secretary of South Korea, North Korea was the one who started the tensions by firing two shells of artillery fires.

The tension was started after two South Korean Military personnel were injured because of the land mines in the Demilitarized Zone in the border of North and South Korea. According to South Korea, the only reason they fired back is because the actions of North Korea is already a sign of military provocation.

3 Alternative Ways to Upgrade to Windows 10

Last July 29, Microsoft launched its new version of windows, the Windows 10. A lot of people got disappointed because they thought that they would be getting the update on the day itself. Microsoft said it will be available first for the Windows Insider as an incentive for them. However, there are still other ways on how you can upgrade to Windows 10 without the help of Get Windows 10 app.

1. Using Command Prompt

To do this, you have to be logged in as the administrator and you should launch the Command prompt as the administrator. Just type wuauclt.exe /updatenow click enter and you'll see in the Windows Update section of Control Panel that Windows 10 is already downloading.

2. Using the Media Creation Tool

I prefer this one since this isl the method that worked for my laptop. All you have to do is to download the Media Creation Tool for Windows 10. (Search it on Google) After downloading the tool, you just have to run it but make sure that your Language and Region is set to United States (English).

3. Using the ISO

Download the ISO file into a flashdrive (atleast 4GB but preferably 8GB) using tje Media Creation Tool from Microsoft then plug it in to your computer. (Turn of your computer before you plug in you flashdrive). Open the boot menu of your laptop (Search it on Google, the process varies depending on the manufacturer of your laptop/computer). Windows 10 will install afterwards.

*If the methods above didn't work , just wait for the notification of Microsoft regarding your upgrade. Also, Windows 10 will install in 2-4 hours.
